Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens is an American singer and rapper better known under her stage name Queen Latifah. Queen Latifah's work in music film and television has been recognized with an Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. Her parents are Rita Owens, Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents separated when she aged 10 years old. Latifah was born into the Baptist church, and attended Catholic high school located at Newark New Jersey. The stage name Latifah is a reference to delicate and gentle in Arabic was given to her by her cousin at the age of she was eight. Latifah is a very tall girl of 5'10 inches who played on the high school basketball team. In a school production, she performed Home from The Wiz. Latifah was the first to begin beatboxing for the Ladies Fresh. Latifah was part of Flavor Unit - a group of rappers who gathered around the producer, DJ Mark the 45 King. Mark James, aka DJ Mark the45 King recorded Queen Latifah's rap Princess of the Posse. He then gave it to Yo! MTV Raps Fab 5 Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music has signed Latifah following her hearing of the song. Her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
